Why EBI:

Hawaiian Electric was looking for supervision and assistance in the GSU change out of Unit 6. Our technicians were able to provide the supervision and direction for this transformer change out to be a success.

Scope

  • IPB technicians on site to oversee plant in house employees who were to complete the installation of the GSU termination components onto the plants spare GSU transformer.
  • Ensure all methods, materials and actions around the installation were in line with industry standards.
  • Visually inspect and give recommendations regarding the contact surfaces including acceptance testing.
  • Generate a report based on the inspection and findings post installation.

Challenges

  • Upon arrival, EBI was informed that the plan was to utilize the existing dog house so that both transformers could be interchangeable in the future with minimum modifications – with some real time modifications, our crew was able to accomplish this task.
  • Upon discovery, the low voltage bushings were not silver plated. EBI recommended these ends be silver plated to reduce resistance and potential heating issues. This work was approved by the plant and performed by EBI technicians on site.

Success

  • Through EBI’s internal inspection of the Isophase Bus, the plant has documentation and recommendations for  additional maintenance that was not able to be completed during this outage.
